The assassin series

The assassin series actually started out as one standalone novel named The Killing Grounds, however, it soon became evident that the three main characters each had their own story to tell before the series could be concluded.

The Killing Grounds is Alara Du Preeze story focusing on her journey from street urchin to one of the deadliest assassin in her guild. It was a lot of fun to write and I was very happy with the results, but as her story came to a head her two main compatriots (not friends as an assassin never has friends) were kind of left hanging.

That epic tale led to Lucinda Millhaven's story, A Red Mist, that sees Lucinda's world crumble around her as she descends into a pit of fiery anger and hatred. When all is lost she discovers love in a very strange place, but love is a fragile beast and the red mist is always close by. This is the tale of loss, pain and despair, but also of love salvation and most important of all family, and why? because any Millhaven will tell you, 'Family comes first!'.

Then there was Alex and the insane, Sable, who claimed to be his mother. A study in black is the story of Alex threw the eyes of three people, himself, Sable, and an ex-military bodyguard, named Havana. It's also the story of mental illness and the effects it can have on an individual and a family, a subject that is close to my heart. In the end, this is the story of a young assassin having to fight for his life in a world he doesn't understand. Will Alex find peace in Sable's empire, or will he die to then beast that awaits him should he fail.

With the tale of the three told I embarked on the second trilogy of the series, DragonBlade - The Beast Beyond the Door. This novel follows on from the Killing Grounds as we catch back up with a battle-hardened Alara Du Preeze as she struggles to retire the last of the evil assassins known as the Association that threatened the Guilds stability and who was behind the kidnapping her sponsor and mentor, Lord Osari. This is a tale of monsters and doors, and of a young assassin who could change the future of the country if he can stay alive long enough. It is also the story of Alara and Bastian Millhaven as the two grow closer, but there can be no future for an assassin and a politician, can there?

With the city firmly in the control of the Millhavens, Bastian plans to march north to destroy the Gulliford family who platted against him in the capital, they are also feared Witch Killers and the parents of a young assassin learning that power can be a curse as well as a gift. Alar has to fight not only enemies but also her growing love for Bastian as she becomes increasingly torn between the Guild and her promises to the Millhavens. But lying beneath the mansion is a power long dormant and waiting for the day when an inquisitive man calls out a name. All hell will break loose and Alara will finally understand who she truly is, a revelation that's she's not alone in the world, One is a friend, the other a sworn enemy. What will happen when they collide, find out in, Dragon-Blade - A blaze of Dragons.

Inspirations

So I thought it might be nice to add in some of my inspirations for the Killing Grounds and A Red Mist. If you've read the books you'll know that The Killing Grounds was once was a hotel that overlooked the common ground where the apprentices conducted their early morning runs, and where Alara made her first kill. The hotel was where I had my first work experience as a school leaver (thanks guys!), and I think that the night picture really gives it that edge; I can almost see Lord Osari standing in the shadows of the main entrance.

The places where the story visited were very important to me as a visual aide in measuring time and distance when my heroine was moving around the city, and what better inspiration than your home town!

When it came to visualizing House Black and the great Fort, I used Fort Nelson but I changed its appearance quite radically by chopping off the massive V at the front and adding the mansion and portcullis. Spoiler alert: the fort plays a major role in upcoming instalments!

The Senior Guild Council chambers was a no-brainer as the current Guild Hall is perfect for the role and I wouldn't change a thing (well anything can happen wink wink).

I then needed to focus on The Millhaven side of the story and explore Lucinda's world. Millhaven House was straight out of my imagination so no picture to share, but the Artist Guild is in fact the current home of Portsmouth football club otherwise known as Fratton Park. It is the perfect setting for the Artists Guild (well with a few major tweaks from me of course.) And then there was the bridge that Lucinda jumped from that started her descent into her own private hell and a rather large drug addiction which had to be shown.

I'll add more as I go along!
